Progressing. Permeable to any and all variations of pop. Extraperlo, like history, does not crawl: Extraperlo moves forward flying high, which is exactly how they have transformed a local indie-pop, with no gradiation, into a global sound of projected in “Desayuno Continental.”
The quartet from Barcelona has absorbed the variance of their eager pop with the familiarity of those who never grow tired of learning and moving forward. They are now self confident, taking in the good, turning down the bad, and absorbing a stylistic crossover that knows no limits. They are, in some way, the second black swans – Nassim Nichilas Taleb´s name for a highly impossible event in history - from Barcelona’s underground scene. For sure, the first was El Guincho (who plays here in 8 tracks), a character in Extraperlo´s orbit – Aleix Clavera, bassist of our main characters, who is also part of Díaz-Reixa´s project, however, and leaving no doubt, they have formed a band who is ready to go further and higher. Once again, Barcelona gives birth yet another band with a spirit and restlessness that has not stopped growing since they joined at only 19 years old.
However, what is this debut made of? This is a debut that sounds of everything and more. In any case, it is made of the material dreams are made of, like someone would say talking about the makings of artistic creation, or being more down to earth, of simple creation, art, or a pastime of the same. Extraperlo live in the middle of the road, they are in a place where the spontaneous and the lack of prejudice make Prefab Sprout live in tropicalism; pop’s paradise of the golden age of AM, but in the 80s.
The curiosity of these four Extraperlos makes their proposal come out of the most impossible dreams, of crazy crisscrosses that they could only imagine at first. “Desayuno continental,” the best national debut of the year, is a big mosaic of entwined ideas, of Mediterranean sounds colliding with elegant mid tempo pop of bands like Orange Juice, Pale Fountains or The Lilac Time. The album is full of African tempo and youthful eagerness, full of “fixed” electro and exotic sounds that move you towards the mystical world of Martin Denny or Eden Ahbez. This “Desayuno Continental” evokes the exotic, because it awards an inspiration hard to find in the new pack of bands making world pop.
The slow accent of Borja Rosal, guitarrist and vocalist of the four Extrapelos; the huge, strange and elegant talent of Cacho Salvador, guitarist and whatever else; the creative versatility of Aleix Clavera, with the box and bassist as a sound magician; and the happy go lucky pianist with her 50s like name that reminds of Anaïs Nin juxtaposing her daring figure reminding us of the Talking Heads bassist, Tina Weymouth: Alba Blasi. Those four figures are Extraperlo. They have made themselves through working all and every situation possible, from parallel projects like Albaialeix, Capitán, or Sefronía, to being on stage with the most popular underground bands. As a matter of fact, Extraperlo started working themselves up from the sounds of the national independent pop music of the 90s, an ancient time for the quartet considering they are all 23 years old. The band now chooses and dares to break away from the standard, being more positive, less worried, and working from a mix of inter-tropical sounds. Changing drums for a box set makes “Desayuno Continental” an excellent pop album, which takes the best of yesterday and projects the sounds of the future. But, which is the sound of the future? The one with no complexes, the one that relays on independent folklore – they love Remigi Palmero-, to make a new pop, one that proves to be extremely bright, colorful, and intelligent. That is exactly what Extraperlo is all about and “Desayuno Continental” is just the first chapter of some of the best and careful music that is played nowadays.
